Ingredients

Filling
  • 6 cups peeled and sliced apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp work wonderfully!)
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar packed, for a more caramelized flavor
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon to enhance the warmth of this comforting dish
Topping
  • 1 cup old-fashioned rolled oats for added texture and heartiness
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour can be swapped for whole wheat flour if desired
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter softened or melted
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts (optional, such as walnuts or pecans for added crunch)

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large bowl, combine your sliced apples with 1/4 cup of brown sugar and 1/2 teaspoon of cinnamon. Toss until the apples are well-coated, then place them evenly in a greased 9×13-inch baking dish.
  3. In another bowl, mix together the oats, flour, remaining brown sugar, and cinnamon. If you’re using nuts, add them in here too.
  4. Melt the butter and pour it into the oat mixture, stirring until everything is evenly combined.
  5. Sprinkle the topping over the apples, ensuring every slice is covered.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 35-40 minutes or until the apples are tender and the topping is golden brown.
  2. Let it cool slightly before serving; it’s delicious warm.

Notes

Serve warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a drizzle of whipped cream. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for 3-4 days.
