Ingredients
  

For the Sushi Rice
  • 2 cups sushi rice short-grain rice yields the best results
  • 1/4 cup rice vinegar adds a tangy flavor
  • 1 teaspoon sugar to balance the acidity
For the Toppings
  • 1 cup crab meat or imitation crab for a budget option
  • 1 unit avocado sliced
  • 1 unit cucumber thinly sliced
  • to taste units seaweed sheets nori, cut into strips or squares
  • to taste units soy sauce for dipping
  • to taste units wasabi and pickled ginger optional

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear to remove excess starch.
  2. Cook the sushi rice according to package instructions, typically using a rice cooker or stovetop method.
  3. While the rice cooks, mix the rice vinegar, sugar, and a pinch of salt in a small bowl and microwave for about 30 seconds to dissolve the sugar.
  4. Once the rice is ready, transfer it to a large bowl and pour the vinegar mixture over the rice, gently folding it in without mashing the grains.
  5. Let the rice cool to room temperature while preparing the toppings.
Assembly
  1. In serving bowls, layer the base with sushi rice, then arrange the crab meat, sliced avocado, and cucumber beautifully on top.
  2. Add nori strips as garnish and serve with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger on the side.

Notes

Feel free to swap in ingredients you prefer, such as using kale instead of cucumber or different proteins. Storage tip: Store individual components separately in airtight containers for up to 2 days.
