Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 pound ground sausage Feel free to swap in turkey sausage for a lighter option
  • 6 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk Any kind will do; almond milk can also be used if dairy-free
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 8 slices bread Day-old bread works great; consider whole grain for added fiber
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese Or a blend of your favorites, such as pepper jack

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground sausage, breaking it up with a spatula until it’s browned and cooked through. Drain excess fat and set aside.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, salt, pepper, and garlic powder until well combined.
  4. In a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, layer the bread, tearing it into pieces to fill the bottom.
  5. Sprinkle the cooked sausage evenly over the bread, followed by a generous layer of shredded cheese.
  6. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the top, ensuring all the bread is soaked.
  7. Let it sit for about 10 minutes to absorb the flavors.
Baking
  1. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes, or until the casserole is set and golden brown on top.

Notes

Feel free to get creative with your casserole! Consider adding sautéed bell peppers, onions, or spinach for added nutrition. Fresh herbs like chives or parsley can elevate the flavor profile, while different cheese options such as mozzarella or feta offer unique taste twists. For a spicy kick, add diced jalapeños or hot sauce to the egg mixture.
