Ingredients

For the Casserole Base
  • 1 loaf day-old bread (French or challah) Works wonderfully for this recipe.
  • 8 oz cream cheese, softened Use room temperature cream cheese for easy mixing.
  • 4 large eggs
  • 2 cups milk Can substitute with almond or oat milk.
For the Sweet Mixture
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 tbsp vanilla extract
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
Optional Toppings
  • maple syrup For serving.
  • fresh berries For serving.
  • whipped cream For serving.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking dish.
  2. Cut the bread into cubes and place half of it in the dish to create a base layer.
  3. In a mixing bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth. Add the eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla extract, and cinnamon, and whisk until everything is well-combined.
  4. Pour half of the cream mixture over the bread in the dish, then layer the remaining bread cubes on top.
  5. Pour the rest of the cream mixture over the top, ensuring all the bread is soaked through.
  6. Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate for at least one hour, or overnight for a more flavorful result.
Baking
  1. When ready to bake, remove the plastic wrap and bake for 45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a little puffy.
  2. Allow it to cool slightly before serving, and enjoy your masterpiece with maple syrup or fresh fruit.

Notes

Use day-old bread for the best custardy texture. Letting the dish rest in the refrigerator overnight deepens the flavors. Avoid adding toppings until just before serving for the best presentation.
