Method
Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) to ensure even cooking.
- In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat. Season with salt and pepper, then drain any excess fat.
- In a large bowl, mix the cooked beef with the diced onion, cream of mushroom soup, and a handful of cheese. If you're incorporating mixed vegetables, toss them in now for a colorful addition.
Assembly and Cooking
- In a greased 9x13 inch baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes, followed by the beef mixture, and then the remaining potatoes on top.
- Spread the remaining cheese over the top layer of potatoes for a bubbly, cheesy finish.
- Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 40 minutes. This allows the potatoes to cook through.
- After 40 minutes, remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the top is golden brown and crispy.
- Allow it to cool for a few minutes before serving. This dish pairs wonderfully with a fresh salad or some crusty bread.
Notes
Store any leftovers in an airtight container for up to three days. When reheating, add a splash of milk to keep the dish moist and warm it in the oven or microwave until heated through. For a twist, consider adding seasonal ingredients or mixing different varieties of cheese.
