  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • ½ cup butter, softened (use unsalted for richer flavor) Ensure butter is soft but not melted.

  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1 ½ teaspoons baking powder
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • to taste red and blue food coloring

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, cream together the granulated sugar and softened butter until fluffy.
  3. Beat in the eggs and vanilla extract until fully combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt. Gradually add to the wet mixture, folding gently until a dough forms.
  5. Divide the dough into three equal parts: leave one part as is, mix red food coloring into the second, and blue into the third.
  6. Chill the colored doughs in the refrigerator for about 15 minutes.
  7. Scoop small amounts of each colored dough and roll into balls. Roll in powdered sugar to coat.
Baking
  1. Place the cookies on the prepared baking sheets and bake for 10-12 minutes.
  2. Allow to cool for a few minutes on the baking sheets before transferring to wire racks.

Notes

Store in an airtight container at room temperature for up to a week. Freeze dough balls for longer storage. If reheating, warm in the oven for a few minutes to restore texture.
