Ingredients
  

For the filling
  • 6-8 medium medium apples (Granny Smith or Honeycrisp) Feel free to mix varieties for a more complex flavor.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar Substitute with brown sugar for a richer taste.
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon Adds a warm, spicy kick.
For the topping
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour Substitute with gluten-free flour if desired.
  • 1 cup rolled oats Old-fashioned oats work best.
  • 1/2 cup cold butter Cut into small pieces.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Peel, core, and slice the apples into thin wedges. In a large mixing bowl, sprinkle with 1/2 cup sugar and 1 teaspoon cinnamon. Toss gently to coat the apples evenly.
Mixing
  1. In another bowl, combine 1/2 cup flour, 1 cup oats, and the remaining 1/2 cup sugar. Add the cold butter pieces and mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
Assembling
  1. Spread the apple mixture in a greased baking dish and evenly sprinkle the topping over the apples.
Baking
  1. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender.

Notes

Serve warm with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream. Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to three days or frozen for up to three months. Reheat at 350°F for about 15 minutes.
