Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 1 pound ground beef (80/20 for juiciness)
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs Feel free to use whole wheat for added fiber
  • 1/4 cup diced onion You can substitute with shallots if preferred
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil For frying
Gravy Ingredients
  • 1 cup beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons flour For thickening the gravy
  • optional fresh parsley For garnish

Method

Preparation
  1. In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, diced onion, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Mix until just combined—don’t overwork it; you want juicy patties!
  2. Divide the mixture into four equal portions and shape them into patties, making a slight indentation in the center to prevent puffing during cooking.
Cooking
  1. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Once shimmering, add the patties.
  2. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side until they form a nice crust. Remove from the skillet and set aside on a plate.
  3. In the same skillet, sprinkle the flour into the drippings, whisking quickly to combine. Slowly pour in the beef broth while continuing to whisk, ensuring no lumps form. Bring to a gentle simmer.
  4. Return the patties to the skillet, spoon some gravy over them, and let them simmer for another 5 minutes. This allows the flavors to meld beautifully.
Serving
  1. Plate the hamburger steak with a generous serving of gravy on top. Garnish with fresh parsley if desired, and enjoy!

Notes

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to three days. To reheat, gently warm the burger steaks in a skillet over low heat, adding a splash of beef broth to revitalize the gravy. If you want to freeze them, store the patties without the gravy in a freezer-safe container for up to three months.
